How to become a biomedical equipment technician (BMET)
Becoming a BMET is one of the highest-leverage technical careers in healthcare: median U.S. pay above $58K, growing demand from aging hospital fleets, and a clear path to going independent. Here is what the path actually looks like in 2026.
Step 1 — Get the foundational education
Most working BMETs follow one of three on-ramps. None of them require a four-year degree.
- Associate degree in biomedical equipment technology (2 years) from a CAAHEP-accredited program.
- Military training pipeline: Army 68A, Navy BMET (8 Series), or Air Force 4A2X1 (12–18 months).
- Electronics or engineering technology degree plus on-the-job BMET training.
Step 2 — Build hands-on experience
Classroom theory does not pay for the work you will eventually do. Get reps on real equipment as fast as possible.
- Apply for BMET I / apprentice roles at hospitals, ISOs (independent service organizations), and OEMs.
- Volunteer for PM cycles on imaging, anesthesia, and dialysis equipment — these are the highest-value specializations.

Step 3 — Earn certification
Certification is not legally required to work as a BMET, but it is required by most hospital procurement teams and dramatically raises your billable rate.

- AAMI CRES — Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (imaging).
- AAMI CLES — Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (clinical lab).
Step 4 — Go independent
